Gandhinagar, Sep 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Forty teachers from across Gujarat were honoured with the 'State Best Teacher Award' on Saturday at a ceremony held to mark Teacher’s Day, recognising their contribution to education and the development of students.
Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel presented the awards to the teachers at the state-level ceremony organised by the Education Department.
The awardees received certificates of appreciation and cash prizes in recognition of their work.
Teacher’s Day is observed across India on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President and distinguished educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Addressing the ceremony, Governor Acharya Devvrat extended his greetings to teachers and recalled the importance accorded to the Guru in India’s traditional culture. "While a mother gives physical birth to a child, a Guru transforms a disciple by removing ignorance and showing the path of knowledge," he said.
The Governor contrasted the emphasis of the education system introduced under Macaulay with the value-based approach of ancient Indian education.
He said material prosperity and vocational knowledge alone could not ensure lasting happiness without humanity, compassion, service and devotion towards parents and Gurus.
He pointed out that India had made significant contributions to fields including astronomy and mathematics since ancient times.
While acknowledging the importance of technological and material knowledge in the present era, he stressed that moral values and knowledge of the self were equally necessary.
“Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye,” the Governor said, referring to the principle that true knowledge liberates a person. He cautioned that education without values could contribute to social unrest and decline.
Devvrat urged teachers to use a few minutes before their regular lessons each day to impart lessons on the art of living, patriotism, values and respect for parents.
He said a balance between technology and culture was necessary to develop the next generation.
Education Minister Pradyuman Vaja congratulated the award recipients and their families, saying the best teachers did more than educate children — they inspired the coming generation.
Vaja said teachers played an important role in developing values, quality, skills and curiosity among children.
He described the award ceremony as an effort to honour knowledge and said a society that respected knowledge could progress and build a better nation.
Recalling the lives and values of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Vaja said: "While Parliament and legislative assemblies made laws, teachers shaped the true future of the country in classrooms."
He said the Gujarat government, under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, is working to provide quality education and facilities to children even in remote villages.
He urged the education fraternity to ensure effective implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 and help children become capable, sensitive and self-reliant citizens.
Earlier, CM Patel praised the service of the teachers receiving the awards and described teaching as a national duty. "Teachers contributed to nation-building by shaping individuals," he noted.
The Chief Minister also urged teachers to ensure that students were guided in the responsible use of technology while continuing to promote positive values through their speech, conduct and behaviour.
Governor Devvrat, Chief Minister Patel, Education Minister Vaja and Minister of State, Rivaba Jadeja, paid floral tributes to Dr Radhakrishnan during the ceremony.
